New batteries short charge time
Bought six new batteries a few weeks ago. Before charging them, I measured 6.32-6.39 on the batteries. The first charge only took a few hours, not the 16hrs I expected from reading on the forum. The cart is only driven a mile a day to and from the school bus stop. I charge it at the end of each day with only 2 miles driven on the batteries. Every subsequent charge only takes about an hour and terminates at 44.9V total pack voltage. Each battery measures 6.44V +/- .03 after charger is off.
From past experience with new batts, they took much much longer the first few charges. Is there something to be concerned about? [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] |

Re: New batteries short charge time
Sounds like it is working fine. I wouldn't worry about it. July 2014 batteries. Nice clean installation.

Re: New batteries short charge time
Sounds perfectly normal.
Batteries are rated in Amp Hours. 6-volt T-105's are rated at 225 AH @ 20 hour discharge rate. That of Amp Hours like a volume of gasoline. Time to recharge is a function of Time, amps, and how many Amp Hours you used. Basic formula for a Golf Cart using a C/10 charger (25 amps) H = [AH / A] x 1.2 where H = time in hours, A = Amps, and AH = Amp Hours. So a 2 mile round trip only uses roughly around 800 watt hours and translated to 48 volt battery is 800 wh / 48 volts = 16 Amp Hours used. So if you used a 25 amp charger it would only take roughly [16 AH / 25 amps] x 1.2 = .77 Hours or 46 minutes. Think of it like your golf cart has a 225 gallon tank, and you can only pump roughly 20 gallons per hour in. If you use half of the fuel or 113 gallons it is going to take roughly 6 hours to refill. It is all pretty simple electrical math. |
