1967 Turf Rider IV
Hello Everyone,
Here is my new project, and boy did I pick a winner! I have already stripped the body off, down to the frame with lots of old wiring and the (original?) motor. The battery boxes are completely rusted out, and the frame is rusted completely through. My first project is to find out if the motor is any good. This design has eight solenoids, one is newer than the rest not sure if they are hooked up correctly. I disconnected the motor and jumpered across two that went to the solenoids and used jumper cables from the old charger (it puts out 36v+) to the other two terminals. The motor barely turns over. The two belts are still hooked from the motor to the rear end and they all spin freely. I guess my next step will be to remove the motor and take it apart. There could be mice living in there.... Any thoughts on this? What's next? I am figuring I will have to scrap everything electric and start over and I don't have the budget for that now. Thanks for your help. --Jim |

Re: 1967 Turf Rider IV
Another issue that I will have to figure out is the wheels. The front has a THREE lug 6" wheel with an 8.00-6 tire. The back has a FIVE lug 8" wheel with an 18.5 x 8.5 x 8 tire. I could just powder coat the wheels and go with moon hubcaps, but I would like a 12" LOW profile tire and wheel combo. I have to figure out the 3 and 5 lug situation first. The rear end looks almost like a small automotive rear. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure about the electric stuff, you can have wheel adapters made. The body sure looks cool.

You could always look for new front hubs with 5 lug that will fit your spindles? That thing will look sweet when you're done! Take your time and do it right

Re: 1967 Turf Rider IV
That might be a thought, but I have only seen very few 5 lug wheels out there. Any ideas on how I can get it to four lug? I would hate to have adapters made from 3 to 4 and 5 to 4. I may not have other options.

Re: 1967 Turf Rider IV
Depends on what the brake drums / axle looks like. For example, EZGO has 4 lug and 5 lug options. The hubs and drums can be interchanged os some of the models...
We won't know until............................................. . LOL - Sorry, I just had to have an excuse to use that one |

Re: 1967 Turf Rider IV
Great project! The owner had one simular to your's covered in a blackberry bush overgrowth. We pulled it out, took off the bumpers/body ect. We used an older Yamaha tranny and mixed and matched axle housings and axles to center it. Installed a 36 volt motor a 48 volt curtis contoller and pot box and a f/r switch assy. I don't recommend this, but I cut off the front axle spindles and welded on some Ezgo spindles to accept there hub and bearing assy's (this wasn't ment to be a race car, just cool looking). Our big problem is the fiberglass body has "delamittaded" , It would take countless hours to get it back. So, neighbor, if your in Puyallup area, stop by...Would be glad to show you what we did to upgrade the running gear. Good luck on your build. Dave

I like the styling of that cart. I think that would make a worthy project. If you can keep showing your progress I would enjoy seeing it.
