Default Battery

I am trying to fix up a Melex 512 G, should be a 95 year model, has the black engine. The previous owner took the battery out and I need to find another one. Is it a standard 12V battery? Or does it require a 36V battery? So far I am having NO luck in tracking down information on the battery or charging system, but I see there is a voltage regulator inline, so it makes it a bit difficult to figure out the voltage requirements. Any help is greatly appreciate, if you have a part number, that would be even greater!

Interesting that the Group 26 battery has the positive and negative poles reversed from the way it should be.
The group 24 battery has this same problem and has also been recommended for this cart.

When you install the battery with the positive pole toward the front of the cart, the battery cables must be crossed to connect correctly.

It works but makes it too easy to connect wrong.
Amazingly this cart will work with the poles reversed.
But I suspect the generator does not charge the battery all the way when reversed.

I speak from experience because I had the connections reversed for two years before I realized it was wrong (when I installed a new battery).

I have the 9 HP Vanguard engine.

BTW, the positive cable goes to the solenoid.
Negative cable goes directly to the generator.

My positive cable was so faded that it was difficult to tell it was ever Red.

The previous owner had it connected backwards.
