Torque converter vs clutch
I recently purchased my first buggy project and have a few questions on torque converter and centrifugal clutches. I have a lifted golf cart on 33inch tires im going to be using it as an off road work horse. I have a predator 420cc engine and am wondering what I should get a tc or clutch? The size i would need for either? and what gear ratio i should run?
Thanks for the help. |

Re: Torque converter vs clutch
If you are talking centrifugal clutch like the smaller go karts use...forget it. It will never work plus you will have no low to high range.

Re: Torque converter vs clutch
We tried a centifugal clutch on a go-kart with 22" tires years ago,we even geared it really low.It actually melted the clutch! We switched to a Jack-Shaft,ran 2-1/2:1 from the motor to the shaft, then almost 6:1 from the shaft to the rear, then it would climb trees!!!You either need to run the centrifugal with a jack-shaft(double-reduction),or run the Torque-Converter(CVT).Golf-Carts run around 12:1 stock-rear ratio, with a CVT.You will want this, maybe even 15:1 depending on what you want to do with it,and what it weighs.Golf-Carts weigh 500-750lbs.on average and come stock with 18" tires.Hope this helps.

Re: Torque converter vs clutch
Use a golf cart clutch, or one from CPP for 1" shafts but they don't have the generator pulley if you plan to use that with the clone. The cvt is way WAY better than gokart setup for this use. I could pull my 17' speedboat (150hp V hull) out of the lake with my stock 9hp with a few mods to the clutch (G9 yamaha) then run 30mph gps down the road with 22 tires, though I had to air them up to hit 30 they measured 23. The trans is around 13:1 and the cvt overdrives .9 so that makes about 11:1 final high ratio. No governor so around 5K rpm. I'd recommend you set it up for a 1 3/16 belt.

Re: Torque converter vs clutch
For the clutch-end of it,yes. But you still need to figure out your final-drive ratio from the jack-shaft to the axle.

Re: Torque converter vs clutch
I think they use the 44 series for G1 carts, but you could try a 40 I guess. Most stock cart clutches are larger.
