High speed gear
I have a ds club car. The local dealer said to install high speed gear- so I did and bigger tires. Now I cannot climb a hill- So I put a 400 motor in it and re_clutched it. Still cannot climb a hill. Any ideas what to try next???

Re: High speed gear
What gear ratio did you install? 6:1? 8:1?
Fe290 will suffer pretty substantial torque loss with a high speed gear on a large steep hill, more so with the 6:1. What do you mean by installed a 400 motor in it? Kawasaki FE400? That’s not a ton stronger than the 290c again depending on hill size. And what year is your cart? Again, depending on hill size you may need something like a v twin swap… but need a lot more information. Any probably the most important question… why did they say you need HS gears? What was the original problem you were having? |

Re: High speed gear
The club car dealership just said - hi speed gear. I am thinking 6-1. It’s a 1994. Fe400 engine- It is fast but barely will climb a hill. What is the v-twin u would suggest to climb hills and have speed! I live a little over two miles from course

Re: High speed gear
You still haven’t said what kinds of hills, how long, steep, etc.
6:1 is gonna be tough regardless of the engine if you’re trying to climb a mountain… vanguard 23hp is probably your best bet… But still doesn’t answer the question why it was recommended you install the HS gears to begin with. |

Re: High speed gear
Since part of my road to the golf course is 55mph I wanted to go faster. As for hills. Typical course. But my cart is a pooch. It stuggals with a fold down ramp on a standard trailer.

With a stock-ish motor i would only go with HS gears -OR- bigger tires. I bet you're going pretty darn fast on flat roads but hills will not be happening i would think. |

Re: High speed gear
Its simple math: high speed gear, lower numerically= top end, taller tires do the same as a high speed gear. You have thrown insult to injury doing both. In the off road world you add bigger tires you go to a numerically higher "low speed" gear to make up for the increase in tire height.

Re: High speed gear
Following this discussion- Your cart is a 1994? Origionally had a CCW motor? You installed a FE400 is that a CCW motor as well or is it CW? Has your reverse now become your forward?
