Engine upgrade advice for G16
Hey folks. Been lurking around a long time but first post.
Some time ago I got into a p*ssing contest with a buddy who lifted a cart onto 30" tires and did a motor swap. This of course led me to lift mine up quite a bit.. and I want to move to the next state (engine). These pix are a bit older but I am basically going to run a set of 27" ATV tires. We generally use our cart to woods ride ..with a frequent water (puddle) crossing. The temporary tires pictured are appx 26" tall and our top speed is 23mph with the stock G16. I want some advise on what engine to swap. I realize "how much $$$ to spend" is the bigger question but I am looking for broad suggestions based on what your setup/knowledge is. I have a goal of min. 30mph and enough torque to turn 27 mud tires through the woods and some light mud. We dont hill climb much but some lighter stuff here and there. TIA for your thoughts. |

Re: Engine upgrade advice for G16
I'd say 16 hp to 23 hp briggs v-twin, mines on 22" tires with 16 hp briggs no gov. tons of torque. 35 mph top speed

Re: Engine upgrade advice for G16
Alot of guys run snowmobile/atv cvt engines and do pretty good.
You'll also see some "clone" swaps. A clone is a Honda clone type engine usually 16hp from a place like Harbor Freight. |

Not counting finding a deal on a small engine...my dilemma with the bigger HP engines is I can probably luck into an ATV for close to same price range. My buddy did the 200cc Honda chain drive (his was orig. electric) from a 3-wheeler. Another friend did the 250cc big red and used the (widened) rear axle. A 3rd friend did a 400cc atv swap and swapped the front suspension & engine/rear. No doubt there an obvious difference between ease of install versus a lot of fab work. Again, just seeing what all the options are. |
