Holy F... That is not engineering. That's 'i got a gift card to home depot let's put something together'. I've opened a few batteries now and never seen lets fill this up with spray foam for mechanical retention. What a joke...

That sucks for womsterr, definitely not meant to be repaired. I would probably give it a shot, I've heard acetone will dissolve spray foam. But it's high risk with NMC cells. Discharge it as much as possible before you tear into it.

When I've built my DIY battery, I've left some room for the BMS to breath. Really no good idea to seal that part with foam.

I have not seen any other drop-in batteries using 18650 cells like that. The Samsung batteries in EzGo carts are made that way but in a very well engineered way and with top of the line Cells. I would love to have a bunch of those cells to make Ebike batteries out of but I wouldn't think of making a golf cart battery that way. Too much effort to connect that many cells in a reliable way. Any serviceable battery needs to have a way to replace the electronics since they are the most prone to failure. The cells should last a long time if the BMS prevents them from being abused.
Tesla uses thousands of cells in their EV batteries - but each cell is connected with a "fuse wire" so that if the cell fails, the fuse opens and the battey can still be used without the failed cell. That is a must when you have that many cells in a battery pack.
My Ebike battery is 48V (14S) with 3P configuration I believe (That would be 42 cells)

When I get my video clipped together, you will see some amazing ****, literally, that Trent and Nick put in those batteries. Ive taken a lot of clips over the past week trying to figure out what this one I had left that sort of worked was doing. I found Popsicle sticks, AM/PM aka 7-11 straws of various colors, and other nonsense presumably used as shims or filler for the foam. Oh, and the foam burns rather easy, ask me how i know.

I have 2 torn apart on the bench. One completely, every single cell stripped down and stacked/boxed for future project, and one stripped, but the cell block still "glued" together for the time being. Its what I've been doing for the past day, since the 3rd battery lost 20% charge overnight, sitting static, and the battery was hot to the touch for the 5th day in a row with no charge or drain connected.

I figured it was best to open it up and disable it before it started a fire, or killed the cells beyond usability.

That's wild, share some pics here for the group chuckles. I still have empty Coors light can and crumpled up pack of Marlboros on my what we'll find in the insulation bingo card.

Oh, and I finally got this one up while I was at it. 2+ years in the making.

I have quite the history with these guys, sadly....

If you have 'my 4 year old's playdough' on your card, stamp it! 😂
