Default Columbia Par Car not Charging

I believe I have a 1982-1986 Columbia Par Car Gas Golf Cart. I have been trying to get it running correctly but haven't had any luck. I purchased a new StarterGenerator for it but I am not sure if I dont have something hooked up correctly or not. I have bypassed all of the factory wiring for the time being to see if I can eliminate defective parts so I know for sure which part I need before purchasing. I have the starter generator where it will start the golf car but once I disconnect the power wire to the starter alternator after it is running I am unable to get 12v coming from the starter generator to charge the battery. I have hooked a volt meter to all of the terminals on the starter generator and unable to get it to read 12v while its running. I appreciate any help with this!

There is a certain way to check the generator output.

Scroll down to page 8-19 and follow the generator test procedure.

Backyard,
I am getting a voltage when doing as the guide said. The 3 wires on the voltage regulator, orange, black, green. With the green on DF on the starter generator and orange on positive of battery and black on ground. Is that correct? Should orange be switched some sort of way with the key switch? The starter generator gets really hot with it wired up like that and appears to lose a little power. Thanks

How many volts did it get up to?

What do you mean it looses a little power?

When I tested mine, it seems like mine got hot too.

Do you know exactly what year it is?

On the voltage regulator, D+ goes to the A2 terminal on the starter, D- goes to the A1 terminal on the starter, DF goes to the DF terminal on the starter. So just take the wires off and make sure they go where they go plus you need to look for any diodes.

Some models have diodes wired inline between the starter and voltage regulator. It is possible they went bad if you have them. They usually hide in the sheathing.

If you find any diodes you need to test them with a multimeter that has a diode test on it. Just leave the wires off to test, if they come off.

Check out the other service manuals too. It might be helpful to know the exact year of your cart as the early to mid-80s carts is when HD / Columbia changed from the adjustable voltage regulator to the solid state ones.

All the same, if you are pretty sure the wiring is right then your voltage regulator probably needs replaced. Those are pretty hearty but they do go bad over time.
