I've used just about every oil. Synthetics are best, and use a zinc additive. Any weight will do in the summer like 30 weight, but winter use definitely use a 5w or 0w.

Spark plugs come pregapped. There's really no need to regap your plugs when they are new, just make sure they are both the same.

Valvoline VR1 has a high initial zinc content, so no need to add. Have used it in all my flat tappet cam engines with success.

Valvoline vr1 is oil for a car engine water cooled! Air cooled motors run much hotter. Oil for Harleys or ATVs much better protection even briggs oil. Then add zinc, Amsoil 0-40 atv oil is what I run, just my opinion.

I looked what Generac and Kohler recommend for their generators. Top of the food chain was a 5w -30 syn oil.

While air cooled engines do run warmer, oil temperatures in excess of 250 degrees are a cause for concern and should be addressed immediately. That said, synthetic motor oils like VR1 can withstand temperatures nearing 400 degrees before breaking down and burning. Putting them well within the 'safe' range of use in a air cooled application.

I stand corrected vr1 has a much higher flash point than I thought, great oil for the v twins. Amsoil has even higher flash point around 40 degrees higher and they say there oil is so slick zinc is not needed but I add a little anyways.
