Big bore clutch issues
Hello all. Been stuck on this issue with my 22hp predator install. I have a 1988 club car ds with predator 22hp installed. Running comet 780 and cvtech secondary with 21" tires. Engine has only had governor removed. The issue is with the belt slipping, and getting pulled down in the secondary on takeoff. It seems as if secondary spring is to weak. Once cart is moving the secondary clutch pushes belt outward and as primary closes secondary opens. I'm just wondering if anyone more familiar with these clutches has any idea what I need to do. Beyond this the cart would be a blast and will push 40 on slight downhill.

Re: Big bore clutch issues
I'm a little confused from your description....
As the primary clutch closes, the belt will ride higher in the sheaves. When that happens, the belt will gradually ride lower into the secondary clutch. At full shift, your belt will be at the top of the primary and at the bottom of the secondary. Is that what's happening? |

Re: Big bore clutch issues
One way to test your secondary is to remove the belt and physically open and close the sheaves by hand. If they are easy to move, you might have a broken spring. If things are normal, they should be difficult to move by hand.

Re: Big bore clutch issues
No, right on takeoff the belt gets pulled down in the secondary and then slips. Climbing small hills it does the same. Clutch doesn't open up.

Looks like Slonomo is on the money here.

Re: Big bore clutch issues
I'll have to try opening it by hand tonight.

Re: Big bore clutch issues
The secondary pulls apart pretty hard. I can only just move it. It looks like maybe it's misaligned side to side a little.

Re: Big bore clutch issues
It looks like the belt slips, drive clutch closes till the belt starts grabbing, lugs motor, drive clutch opens, then it takes off.

Re: Big bore clutch issues
Hard to tell from the video. I will say this, the belt will drop down into the rear clutch on take off, that's how the cvt works. The front (primary aka drive) clutch controls the engagement and drive power. The rear (secondary aka driven) clutch controls the shifting and gear ratio. CVT stands for Continuously Variable Transmission, meaning it's always self adjusting and changing the gear ratios automatically. The belt will always be up and down inside the sheaves of the clutches at all different levels.
If you have slippage, the belt is either worn, poor quality, or misaligned with the secondary. If you aren't sure on the physical condition, remove all the parts and inspect and post photos. |

Re: Big bore clutch issues
I believe I've possibly solved this. It seems the secondary is on backwards so as the clutches advance they move away from each other. The unfortunate part is the I'm recovering seats and waiting on power coating so I may not get to try it for awhile.
