couple of easy wiring questions
1) Got some 2 ga. cables on the way for the cart, is there anything tricky about replacing them? Should I take off the motor cover/seats or just reach around everthing? Are some of the connections harder to get to than others? I know the battery connections are easy, just not so sure about the motor-controller cables. I've read for a good amount of my work month trying to figure this out, but it sounds like a simple job.
2) What type/brand/gauge wire do yall run for your accessory power? I ran my lights and stereo with a mix of solid core and stranded 16 gauge I got from radio shack. Does that sound good enough? Reason I ask, my lights magically stopped working tonight. Switch still lights up, but no glow. Fuse isn't blown, but I wired the lights as my first project on this cart, and might have not done it "up to code" and might need to re-do it. Thanks for encouraging me to waste all my money!! (And for the good advice ) |

Re: couple of easy wiring questions
Generally speaking solid wire is for household or AC wiring and stranded wire is for automotive or DC voltage ....
Unless somebody knows better than this |

Re: couple of easy wiring questions
16 gauge is only good for 8 10 amps not very much, i would only use 12 gauge stranded or bigger for your radios and lights.. your in electricity brad
ps i would fuse this also for only the gauge wire being used. you dont want fires buy over fusing the wire... yes i am a electrician.. brad |

Re: couple of easy wiring questions
Yea, that's what I was scared of. I really didn't notice that it was solid core till I went to do some splicing/cleaning up this past weekend.
What about the 2 gauge rewire? Anything I need to plan on or worry about? Ps-thanks for the quick replies everyone! Last edited by scrunner; 03-16-2010 at 10:11 PM.. Reason: cant spell |

Re: couple of easy wiring questions
10 Gauge wire fused at the battery pack for 25/30 amps to the fuse block. (either under the seat or inside the dash) I like a fuse block a lot better than a bunch of wires going to the pack with a separate fuse holder for each circuit. Also, you can tape a couple of variety packs of fuses to the side of the fuse block, and you will always have spares, and know where they are.
From the fuse block you can run SHORTER separate circuits for headlights, radio, horn, etc. One advantage of a fuse block in the dash area is that you only have to run 2 wires from the batt. pack under the cart instead of a pair for each accessory.(less vulnerable to snags from below) Run your 10 gauge Neg. wire to a spot near the fuse block and use a 1/4' brass bolt and nut to attach all of your Neg. leads to. (be sure to insulate it from the frame AND the fuse block). I would not use any thing smaller than 14 gauge. All wire should be automotive type-NOT solid. Sorry for long post...guess I just kinda went off! Good luck! |

Re: couple of easy wiring questions
all good advice! remember, as Russ said: do NOT ground to the chassis. all grd wires must run back to the source or to a grd block insulated from the frame.

Re: couple of easy wiring questions
I've got basic wiring principals down, and am slowly figuring out how to do it on the cart. My problem is that I get so excited to get whatever new toy I'm hooking up working, that I cut corners...
that being said - where should I get the wire to fix all my mistakes? i'm getting a little tired of radio shack oh - and thanks again for the good info guys! |

Re: couple of easy wiring questions
Pretty much any auto parts store should have it all.
Primary wire, fuse-block, switches, fuses, cable ties, and connectors. The corrugated wire shrouds are fairly cheap, and make for a nice and better protected install. |
