Default Leaf springs failing - Need advice

So as expected my leaf springs are starting to flatten after almost a year and are going to need replacing soon. I tried searching but really didn't come up with anything definitive so I started my own thread.
I want to replace the rear leafs along with shocks. What do you guys recommend for replacements that won't make it ride like a tank?
I saw somewhere on here about using shocks from a 70's ford pinto or something similar? Thanks for the help
