Yamaha G1 (1979) 4 Cycle Motor Swap?
Hey All, I'm sure it's been done, but I wanted to see if anyone has swapped a their 2 cycle Yamaha motor with a 4 cycle Yamaha? I use it mostly for camping which lead me to want to make the buggy quieter with the 4 Cycle motor swap.
If you've performed this swap, was it worth it and what's required? Does the motor mount to the stock motor mounts? I'm guessing the rear end needs to be swapped as well. Thanks for your help! Ed |

If you want "reverse", you would also need to chane to a 4 cycle transaxle.

Re: Yamaha G1 (1979) 4 Cycle Motor Swap?
You won't find too many that have done this because of the reverse issue. The stock G1 engine actually runs backwards to give the cart reverse, there is no actual reverse gear in the transaxle, as stated above. I considered the same swap to a 4 cycle but decided against it because of the extra work and cost involved with the axle swap.
It can be done, however. And if losing reverse doesn't scare you, I'd go with a clone engine. At around 13 hp or more it will run very nice, lots more torque. If you go with a Yamaha golf cart 4 cycle, I'd go G2-G9 donor, as the frame itself is very similar and working on them will be similar. But if you have a donor cart....why not just use the other cart? |

Thanks! Yeah, I think I'm going to put together a newer Yamaha Cart. I had a lot of fun customizing the 79! In fact, I have a lead on 1999 G16 project. Going to take a look at it on Monday.
Thanks again! Ed |

I have also contemplated this swap. I really like the styling of the G1 and ours came out nice. Mine is only G1 in campground.
As long as it runs good and rear end doesn't go...I will deal with having a 2-cycle. |
