Re: 81 gasser
There isn't a ton you can do to these older Marathons, but for a start, a shorter drive belt will increase takeoff and torque, the HEI mod will give you a hotter spark and likely improve overall performance a bit ... Those are the easy ones. As to carb, there are guys who have used larger carbs but the factory exhaust will also have to be modified or replaced if you go that route and expect any real performance gains.
Depending on which clutch is on your cart, you can possibly shim it or send it in to CPP for modification, but the shorter belt is about $30 and will give you the bulk of the same increases as an expensive "redo" will - that's entirely up to you. Looks like you're already running larger tires, that also increases top end (and is a good justification for the shorter belt to restore your hill-climbing and takeoff power). The motor is a 244cc, 9hp Robin 2PG 2-stroke, and if it's still set up with an oil injector system you may want to consider pulling it and running 128:1 premix, as these older oiler systems are prone to sudden failure, which can easily take your engine with it Hope some of this helps, Welcome to BGW !!! |

Re: 81 gasser
Shim the clutches, cost about $3-$5 for the washers(use at least grade-5).Shim both about 3/16"-1/4" and remove the shim between the sheaves on the Driven-Clutch.Big improvement. Also scrap the govenor if you haven't yet.Hope this helps.
