Rear Diff parts for 90 Marathon electric ?
I have a 1990 EZGO Marathon thats been raising cain in the rear end. I actually thought there was a piece of metal or a piece of gear laying inside the cover and getting picked up then thrown around. It's a clacking noise like something being thrown around in the carrier or cover. While out taking the dogs for a ride last night, it started getting excessively noisy to the point I thought I might not make it back home.
So today I pulled the rear diff, threw it up on a bench and popped the cover. No bits of anything in inside whatsoever. I pulled the input shaft hoping to find a trashed bearing but no such luck. Those 2 bearings seem fine. they roll fine and no grit to them. As I rotate the carrier with the brake drums I start to feel resistance somewhere in that 360 degree turn but can't figure out where. There is no excessive gear wear anywhere. The I finally realize what's happened. The spider gears have slop on their ID where they ride on the cross pin. And jolting the brake drum back and forth by hand reproduces the clacking sound I'm hearing when driving it around. Either the cross pin is worn from the spider gear or the gear is worn from the pin. I don't know which is softer. There is no locking bolt to remove the cross pin like on an auto diff. I suspect you may be able to drive it out with a punch. it had to go together somehow. After doing a few hours of searching on the web, there seems to be zero availability of rear diff parts for this cart. I cant even find a complete diff for sale. This is a shame since I have brought this thing back from a pile of junk to a really nice restored cart. If I cant find any way to get parts, I guess I'll have to part it out. Thats going to make me sick as I will loose a lot of money and I loose the cart completely. I think replacing both spider gears and the cross pin would most likely resolve all the issues with the diff. Any help or input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

that does look like it but its not a wishbone is a leaf spring setup with perches. stand by and ill get you some pics. come to think of it, the diff cover certainly looks like something dana would make. |

Here are the pics
I dont know if the number on the casting or the carrier cap numbers will help. while out there, I spun each drum individually and the pass side seems to bind up but not the drv side. I will pull the axles and check the bearings. I dont think it will be that simple but it would be awesome if it is. I wouldn't think there should be that much slop in the ID of the spider gears and the pin. I did see a roll pin holding the cross pin in. it appears that you have to pull the carrier caps and slide it out so you can drive the pin out from the other side. |

Re: Rear Diff parts for 90 Marathon electric ?
The link that I posted has the manual and the Dana manual and those are both the same as the rear end in your cart. In the manual there's an exploded view of the rear end that shows all the parts and pieces. There's only 8 bearings in the rear end. Them rear-ends are pretty tough.
