Default Lost Power

2001 ez go series lost power under load. Took the cover off the controller area and it had a burnt odor when removed. Diode across solenoid got exztremely hot with the key on. Connections seem to be good. Cart will not move at all.
Solenoid? Controller? Motor? How do I check? And what does the diode do and will it cause this problem?
Thanks
