Default School me on Lithium please

I'm not looking to be spoon fed so if anyone can point me to a good thread or website with the very basics I would much appreciate it.

It's been a while since I have been active on this forum. I built my cart for hunting when my kids were younger but now they are grown and into other things so the cart had stayed parked mostly and I have been using my ATV. I recently joined a new hunting lease where electric is "preferred" and figured it was time to get the cart going again.

My cart is 36v but everything is there to upgrade to 48v. It is a 91 Marathon but the body is about the only thing still original. The electronics on it are an Alltrax AXE 650 amp controller, D&D torque/speed series motor, HD solenoid and custom HD FNR switch with 2/0 gauge cables. I have kept the batteries up but they are ten years old now and probably need replacing. I logged back on to see what new info there might be and to find contacts for vendors.

That is when I noticed the Lithium forum. So obviously now if I am going to upgrade batteries I figure might as well be lithium. I have read through several of the build threads and get the general idea. I am pretty clear on basic cart knowledge and lead acid batteries but the lithium pack building has me a little unsure. I'm trying to figure out what I need and how to go about it.

Battery University is great place to start your education. There's a lot of good build threads on here that you can read up on as well. Most people seem to be going with Nissan Leaf modules because the 14S configuration gives you the advantage of 58.4v and easily configured modules. Some people have had good success with the Chevy Volt battery but they're more difficult to use and are only a 12S.

My advice is to read, read, read... ask some questions on here, order a bunch of parts and wait for the parade of delivery trucks. Quickly assemble and install you shiny new lithium pack... Then tell your wife there must be some mistake on the credit card statement next month! Oops. ;)

Thanks for the link. Looks like I have plenty to read up on there.

So part of my confusion is the 14S vs 12S. Is the 14 or 12 the number of cells and does S stand for series?

Yes - "S" stands for series. Packs are often talked about as Series / Parallel. For example, 14S, 2P would be two cells in parallel and 14 in series for a total of 28 cells. Most golf carts are nominal 48 Volts with Lead/Acid batteries. Lithium batteries vary from about 3.3V to 4.2V per cell from discharged to fully charged. If you multiply those numbers by the number of cells in series it gives you the range of voltage of the battery. So 12S is a bit lower than an equivalent 48V Lead acid pack and 14S is a little higher. The Leaf modules I used are 2S2P each so 7 of those in series would give you 14S. I used 14Modules in series/parallel so my pack is 14S 4P which gives me about 120Amp Hours of capacity.

So looking at used Leaf batteries online the price seems to depend on the amount of capacity they still have.....60%, 70% etc. Is there a recommended minimum capacity number that I should be looking for?

Look for Leaf modules that came out of a car with as low as miles as possible; G2 modules preferably. Leaf modules were considered 66ah brand spanking new, so anyone selling modules listed as 66ah is lying and hasn't measured them. My G2 modules were from a 2015 car with a measured capacity of 58ah when I bought them.

Ideally you want as much capacity as possible. If at all possible you should find modules that came from a 2015 Leaf from an area with a cooler climate and as few miles as possible on the vehicle.
