Default Battery Condition

I am purchasing a 48 v 2010 CC Precedent with original batteries. I don't feel like I should buy new batteries right away but would like to check them to see. I have read through the forum and saw the chart that was posted several times. So do I understand correctly that if the batteries are 100% charged the voltage would read around 50.93? So if I check them before I purchase can I use that chart to determine how much charge they will hold (100%, 90%, etc.)?

Thanks for the help.

You can't go only by voltage, you need to do a load test on them as well. The batteries could show normal voltage but when you put them under a load it drops drastically.

Without having a load tester, try securing the voltmeter leads to the batteries and hit the gas to get a simultaneous reading. If the voltage drops by more than a few volts you should probably be concerned.

I would also range test them. Do a full charge, play 18 holes (or do your normal day of driving) and then take a battery reading on each battery with an accurate DVM. Look at the chart and see what % charge remains. If it's way over 50%, you can get some more use out of the batteries.

What EA said:

When I bought my first cart back in 2000, I fully expected to replace the batteries right off the bat. Especially since one terminal showed evidence of slight melting and the sides of all 6 were bulged out somewhat.

Welded up the battery trays and reinstalled the batteries, figuring 'nothing ventured, nothing gained'.

Ran them for 4 full seasons and part of another. Mind you, I'm fussy about charging, etc. and don't use the cart hard, but still.....

Try them before condemning them.
