36v to 48v conversion
Hi everyone. So it's been a year and the cart has been fun to have a mess with. But it's getting boring so next up is 48 volts. I am curious, if I were to get a donor 48v cart could I strip all the electronics could that simply be put on my cart, add two more 6v batteries, and then keep the original 36v motor in place? I know I can use the motor but I want to make sure there's not something that would keep this from working. I can get a donor cart for less than 200 and then 150 for two more batteries. So pretty cheap swap if possible.
Common sense says yes, but since I have little nowledge on it or electronics in general I figured I would put the question out there. In the meantime, I'll be searching. |

Re: 36v to 48v conversion
In theory, yes this would work. I figure the main kicker would be the throttle type. Do you have a v-glide currently?
EDIT: What Nole said is exactly right, I was overthinking it a bit... |

Re: 36v to 48v conversion
Sure you can. Just look at it like you are moving your motor over to that cart. If everything is there and in working order, you have what you need. Just move everything over and land it in the exact same place. (If it worked on that cart and you move it all over to yours, that same should occur!)

Re: 36v to 48v conversion
I thought someone would mention this - but if he gets a Regen/IQ donor - nothing will work! He has to find a SERIES donor.

Oh yeah, both me and Jake told him that through our heighten power of subliminal messaging!
In all seriousness, yes, you are correct, I think we were on the obvious that any donor cart at that cost has to be an old series but you make a valid point as you never know. And please note, if it is an IQ cart, everything will still work as long as he adds in a Sepex motor...... |

Re: 36v to 48v conversion
So my cart currently has a 36v series motor so I need to make sure that the donor has the same style motor. So make sure no pigtail on tail of motor or tow/run switch if I read another thread correctly.
Side topic. Can someone explain to me why it is that using the 36v motor in a 48v system results in more speed/power than having a 48v motor? |

Re: 36v to 48v conversion
Even though the cost is 4x the donor, would it just be a better idea to get the Scottyb conversion kit? I saw that and for 650ish it seems like a solid choice too. But if there's not a noticeable gain in power or speed I'd rather save the money where I can.

Re: 36v to 48v conversion
Yes, be sure it is a series (your points are correct) and that is up to you in regards to donor versus upgrade kit. If I remember correctly, it was about a ~30% increase in speed by using the 36v motor in a 48v system and it is simply by virtue of the DC voltage spins it faster and it runs faster. (It will also fail sooner....)
Voltage = speed Amperage = torque/power In a series motor it has voltage that flows in series in one side and out the other. In a sepex (separately excited) motor it has voltage applied separately to the armature and field. |
