It feels great to be making some progress after letting it sit for a year. Can’t wait to get to the paint stage. I plan on taking it all the way down to the frame after I have it running for a while.

Miller Lite always helps with these sorts of projects!

Got a lot done today! First, I installed the “new” forward/reverse switch. The included leads were too short, so I reworked one of the terminals on the original set and swapped them out. Next, I replaced the starter solenoid and overload circuit breaker. There was some questionable wiring on both of them, so I made a new jumper wire and cleaned up some other stuff up. After that, it was time to try to turn the engine over. Thankfully, it turned over pretty easily.

Next, it was time to clean out the gas tank, remount the tank, change the fuel filter, hook up the fuel line, and put a little gas in the tank. After a little cranking, squirting some gas in the carb, and a little more cranking, it started to sputter. After some more cranking, it would start and run, but it was still really rough. I’ll upload a video later so y’all can see what I’m talking about.

Last but not least, I installed some new wheels and tires!

Here are some pics!

As promised, here’s the video of the first start. It’s loud as heck because the inlet on the muffler is rusted out Any thoughts on why it’s running so rough? Timing? Fuel? The spark is strong, the carb is new, and the spark plug is new.

Reset the points to .022 and re-gapped the plug to .040 today, and that seemed to make it run better. I think I need a new plug wire too because the insulation looks a little questionable. I’m going to try to take it for a ride tonight. We’ll see what happens!

My test drive produced mixed results. The good news is the newly rebuilt brakes worked great! The bad news is it ran well enough at first to build some false confidence and entice me to drive down the road past my house and get stranded at the bottom of a hill in a turnaround. LOL. After about 15 minutes of fiddling with the choke and throttle I managed to get it about half way up the hill. Then, I pushed it the rest of the way.

I think my performance issues are multifaceted. My plug wire insulation is questionable causing some arcing, my muffler is rusted out at the inlet causing a loss of back-pressure, and my carb fuel inlet was leaking a little so it was probably sucking in some air. I just placed another big order with Roderick. This cart has been a big investment, but it’ll be worth it in the end because I’ll have a good running, rare Utilicar!

Thanks for the pep talk!! It was a thrill to finally get to drive it down the road. I’m sure the neighbors were impressed too!
