Koyker Raptor-Question Comet 40 or 500?
Hello to all, great forum. Been lurking for awhile, first post. I recently rescued a Koyker Raptor with a Kohler Command Pro Series 14. Planning to do a full restore. I'm a mechanic and Fabricator by trade an am duly impressed with the quality of the machine. The Kohler has a 1" crank w/1/4" key and sadly no clutch.
Koykers are kind of unique since they have a 3 speed tranny (w/reverse). Tranny has 3/4" Input shaft is fitted with a 8 1/2" driven clutch. No name on it (possibly Salsbury(?)) Both the Comet 800 and 858 come in that configuration from what I can read. The 500 Series drive clutch has a wide range ratio and engages at 2100 rpm. This is going to be a yard putter doing lots of idling around. I'm about convinced to go with the Series 40 instead. ($200 is quite a savings) Does anyone know any reason not to use the Series 40? (engages at 1600). Belt palace even sells the belt as "Series 40/500" (7/8" top width) so that shouldn't be an issue. The 40 Series can handle the HP. (8-18 hp) It has golf cart wheels and tires on the front right now (crashed in the front at some point judging by bent front axle pivot hangers) and 25x12x9's on the rear at present (stock I'm guessing). Finding a range that suits my need shouldn't be a problem with the 3 speed or a different tire sizes if needed.....(?) The selling point on the 500 seems to be the wide ratio for UTV and industrial applications. I would think that's covered with the tranny. Any input would be greatly appreciated. |

That thing looks awesome. Is it 4x4?
Do some research and find what clutch it had on it, and get as close to that as you can. Pictures may help with this bunch. Half of us can't read. |

Nah, it's the two wheel drive flavor. I've scoured the net for info on em, slim pickens. Gonna pull the trigger on the 40, if that doesn't work out I'll ebay it or keep it for another project and buy a 500. That's the only other option I can find for the 7/8 OEM driven clutch/belt setup.

I have the same rig and am trying to figure out the belt info. The manual has this information: the primary or drive clutch is 1” bore with designator 94C; it has a Dana transaxle; the secondary or driven clutch is 3/4” bore with designator 90D; and, the belt is 1 3/16” variable speed belt (part number 664910).
The distance between the centerline of the drive shaft to the centerline of the input on the driven clutch is 11 1/2”. Is there a formula out there that can tell us what length belt to get? |

I’ve got a Comet 40 as the primary clutch and a Comet 44 as the secondary clutch. If you look carefully at the clutches you will notice that they are both installed backwards😂. The cart runs fine.

Re: Koyker Raptor-Question Comet 40 or 500?
You might not need it with a tranny with gears, but otherwise the ratio range is pretty important. That is why GC use a full size 7+ inches primary to get a big ratio range for low gearing and higher top speeds. The small diameter clutches on a GC are slower max speed. Some have used them in swaps, they can work fine, but the large ones usually overdrive some.
