Painting Black Plastics on a Precedent
I just bought an old precedent from a neighbor and want to fix it up. I feel the black plastics all the way around are in good shape but are a little dull. I am going to get a new body so I don't need to paint that. My question is how should I prep it? How and what to clean it with? Do I need to sand? I feel it already has a rough texture so I don't need to sand. Do I use a flat black paint? Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

You don't need to paint it. Use a heat gun and restore it. Looks better and last longer than paint.

Re: Painting Black Plastics on a Precedent
To get a good lasting fisish:
1 Go to auto paint store, not parts store, buy: Adhesive promotor such as Bulldog, primer, paint, clear coat if needed and whatever thinner/ cleaner needed. Tell em what you're paintin and they'll tell you the type of primer and paint you will need. 2 Wash well with dewaxer/degreaser. 3 Scuff or sand. 4 Wash again with dewaxer/degeaser. 5 Thoroughly dry. 6 Wipe with cleaner/thinner. Let dry. 7 Apply adhesive promoter. 8 Apply primer within specified time or you will have to sand. 9 Fine sand any rough spots. 10 Apply either 2 stage or basecoat/clearcoat paint with however many coats you want. Usually 2. Let dry. 11 Wet sand and buff. Or do what MrGolf said. The results will be about the same. It just depends on how much time you have on your hands. Muddog |

Re: Painting Black Plastics on a Precedent
If the plastics are just "weathered", try something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/JJI-Technolog...astic+restorer Don't use a "cheap" restorer product. This one works very well and might be worth a try. |

Same thought. I used this one and was very pleased with results. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AAZ1OAE?psc=1 Leaves a greasy finish at first, but went back and rubbed with a micro fiber a couple days later. Lasts for a long time and easy to reapply. |

Re: Painting Black Plastics on a Precedent
Thanks guys for all advice. I have tried a restorer and they look better than they did for sure. I was just hoping to get closer to the like new condition. I do not have heat gun so I will have to try the paint route.

Re: Painting Black Plastics on a Precedent
Cheaper and easier to do as MrGolf suggested and buy a cheap heat gun. Will last for a long time and bring back that "new" look. YouTube the process before you decide to paint.

Re: Painting Black Plastics on a Precedent
I have to ask. Which restorer did you use? I had tried Meguiars and it was useless. Then I tried the one above and was shocked at results. If you go down in the reviews, one person posted pictures of thier gray looking precedent and results after using. Not pushing the product, but I was really surprised at how well it worked. I guess what I am saying is that not just any restorer works.
