Default 98 ezgo 48v conversion

I want to do a 48 volt conversion to my 1998 txt 36 volt cart and had a few questions.

Do I need to replace my motor, controller and solinoid to upgrade to 48 volts?

Is it better to use 6 8 volt battery's or 4 12 volt battery's.

I have 22" tall tires and 8:1 gears. I really want longer run times and live in a area with flat grounds. Thanks for all your help in advance. Rob

You need to replace your controller and solenoid to upgrade to 48v. Your motor will run on 48v. It will produce 33% more torque and speed at the higher voltage.

Golf cart motors consume amperage. A 6 V battery holds more amperage then an eight v battery which holds more amperage then a 12 V battery. So the answer to your question is, how long do you want to run?

Do I need to get a different charger once I upgrade to 48 volts?

Seven 6 V batteries (42v) fit nicely under the seat in an Ezgo TXT. Fitting the eighth battery in there is a pretty good project. You would need to relocate the controller solenoid and forward and reverse switch.
You would need a 48v charger for 48v worth of batteries.
Our most popular controller package for the Ezgo TXT is number 485. This package includes the Alltrax SPM 500 control and the super duty 400 amp solenoid. This package runs on 36 or 48v.
Such an increase in operating amperage will require upgraded battery cables throughout the cart and an upgraded F&R switch. A second option for the F&R is to replace it with a reversing contactor. The reversing contactor eliminates the old-style Rotary F&R.

I went with six 8 volt batteries (Trojan Ranger 160's) that provide me with plenty of run time. They are a little taller than the stock batteries but fit nicely under the seat only requiring minor trimming on the hold downs.

Best is 8 6 volt batteries, but 6 8 volts works too.

You will have to relocate the F&R and controller to fit the 8th battery under the passenger seat.
