Battery Terminal Melted, can I fix this?

I have a 2003 Club Car 48V with Tow/Run switch, Trojan T-875 Battery. The cart still runs but I am afraid to drive it or to even charge it.

I know that the screw was not on tight enough and it caused the terminal to melt. Positive.

I saw the sticky on the "How to repair melted battery terminals" and my questions are:

The nut is back on tight but with it melted ONE, can I charge or too dangerous? and/or can I still drive it? I drove it back from the street to get it back into my garage. Luckily it just a few houses down the street.

I would like to repair like the picture but I am uncertain of a few steps.

TWO Do I need to just cut the damaged terminal piece were the cable is connected to it or do I leave it alone and/or cover it? Once I do that, I would just connect the battery cable to my new terminal?

You can cut it if you want thats what i did on a battery i had to fix or leave it it's up to you, And yes I would fix it as soon a you can it's not safe like that--

If I cut the melted terminal how do I cover it?

Also, I have it on Tow and will disconnect all of the cables -- with that said, I can then drill and then go forward.

Thanks for the link, that was exactly what I was looking at earlier and I keep comparing it to my current battery and think I can continue on the correct path.

Also, the 5/16-18 socket, I can only seem to find those with a head on it. It looks like the one in the picture does not have a bolt head on, I am assuming I can run to Lowe's/Home Depot and get a socket set without the bolt head on it.

The one in the picture uses an Allen wrench to tighten. It's called a socket set screw. Do not use a bolt.

Thanks for the posts and very helpful... additional questions to ensure I am doing this right.

How do I fix the melted terminal?


Do I cut it off? And once I cut it how do I cover it so it doesn't melt when i am trying to charge my Golf Cart and/or while I am driving around?

Do I just leave it there once I install the socket set screw in?
