What can I say ... the interfaces seem to work fine for many ..for some not.

Hopefully Cully will back with an update on success or failure of my proposed connection.

In the meantime I can share my experiences with an 1225-2402. After a couple of bluescreens in Win7 i end up using WinXP. That may be related to the drivers.

I tested with two usb-ttl and one rs232-ttl converter without success. I do not have an inverter chip so I have not tried that.

Then I risked it all and connected an usb-rs232 directly to the controller and then it worked perfect. I have not dug deeper in this, but does not inverted ttl suggest that it actually is regular rs232 signals? Perhaps model dependent?

This is what worked for me but if the input is ttl then bad things may happen!

The controller logic is serial.

TTL logic is the opposite of serial logic.
IF your using a USB lead whose output is TTL logic then the TTL logic signal needs changing ( inverting ) to become Serial logic.

Thus your USB - RS232 lead worked... as it outputs the correct logic AND at a low voltage.

hi there Woodygb
thanks for your reply i have try-ed all the combinations with and without 7404 board
I'm beginning to think my 1228 don't like me

the soft version I'm trying with is 1314-4401 version 3.12 (build 35) update patch 6

i found a site that said it might be a software lock out not seeing a genuine dongle

any other ideas ??

If I get a chance I will try myself on a 1228 that I'm sure is kicking around here somewhere.
I'll use the same prog and the cheapo USB - DB9 adapter in the pic and post the result..

Yes, that is actually true. I grabbed an oscilloscope and measured 0-5v on tx and 0-3.3v on rx (from computer side).

I am using the same software as you cully and woodygbs schematics are correct. One way to test communication is to use a terminal program, ie putty, set it to 9600 8N1 and send a colon (":") to the controller. If it echoes it back then you have a connection. In Win7 this works for me, but the 1314 software does not.

And the controller has to be powered both on the battery terminals and the KSI (keyswitch input).

hmm think il go back and double check
and remake my lead

yes i did have KSI powered

one thing i did notice thought
with the cable connected as the drawing above it disabled the working of the controller,
but if i used the 7404 board the controller would work normaly off the throttle 0-5v control pin4

reading from earlyer in this thread
yourself mention

Try adding these green wire loops in your DB9 plug.
RTS (Pin 7) and CTS (Pin 8 ) are connected together.
DTR (Pin 4) and DSR (Pin 6 ) are connected together

and also Frodus post 272 pg 28 mentions a registry entry

are either of these needed?

Mine is as shown ( in the USB-SERIAL pic )..no loops no registry alterations and using XP.

Data Flow..

TX of USB - SERIAL cable talks to RX of controller.
TX of controller talks of RX of USB-SERIAL cable.

It doesn't need to be a PL2303 chip...the one in mine is a CH340.
