Default Painting aluminum

I have some aluminum supports that I want to paint black. What do I need to do to prep it. I read to use etching primer before painting. I also have some steel supports that are already painted gloss black. Would lightly sanding and paint be fine for those. Thanks

Yes on the etching primer for aluminum. Yes on the light sanding on the black ones.

Would aluminized steel exhaust pipe be treated the same as aluminum?

If it is you're exhaust that you are doing you could always bring it to the powder coater and have it ceramic coated. It is a great looking shiny aluminum looking finish that will not change colors with heat. I have done a couple of them and they look awesome, just a thought.

Its not the exhaust. Just some nerf bars I made a couple years ago out of exhaust pipe.
