Default 1996 ezgo governor question

So I’m working on my buddies ezgo it’s a 6 passenger we cranked the governor all the way in and it’s still only topping out at 15 mph. Is there something else I’m missing here.

The igniter has a rev limiter.

More details on the cart would be useful, tire size? is it lifted? what gearing does it have in the trans-axle? Is it a 295 or 350 cc engine? does it have a 28 or 36 degree driven clutch?

It is an old machine and any number of modifications may have been done to it.

I would assume being a six seater it may have low gearing and a 28 degree clutch. If so, without modifications it is what it is. What speed did it achieve before tampering with the governor.

I would leave it at 15 because if’s hulling a lot of people around and the wight is uneven and you take a corner to fast you cud flip it

Went from 12 mph to 15. I don’t have any of the other information on the gearing clutching but that would make sense because it has a lot of torque. Where would I find info on the gears?

May need to adjust the throttle cable. You should hear the switch at the pedal and then see the throttle plate move.

To check the gears you’ll need to jack the rear off the ground. Turn the driven clutch by hand and count how many times you have to turn the clutch to complete one rotation of the rear wheel. Helps to make a sharpie mark on the clutch and on the tire at 12:00 to count rotations.

Also put it in neutral and rev the engine. Watch the clutch operation and make sure the clutches are working properly. A worn or faulty drive OR driven clutch can really kill speed and torque if not allowed to provide full range of operation. Sort of like driving a 5 speed car and not having access to 5th gear, so to speak.

There’s a really good video here about how cvt clutches work. Give it a watch and compare when you try it in your cart.
