New member, dead battery cell and voltage concerns
Hello. First post here but been trolling for years. Lots of good information on here so I hope I can get some assistance.
I have a 2012 Precedent. With the following: 14 inch wheels Madjax dc/dc 30 amp converter Madjax battery meter (horrible item) Madjax front and rear led light kit My question is about voltage and charge limits. Batteries are all from early 2014. 48v system. All batteries are about 8.25 v except one is reading 8.13. The overall voltage after charging is 49.4. Specific gravity is all about 1.275 or greater except for a bad cell on the 8.13 battery that says 1.000. Batteries have been maintain properly since I bought this cart 6 months ago. There is obviously a dead cell and I want to know if there is a way to fix that before it causes other cells to go. Also, I feel like I should be able to get over 50v on a full charge but it will not get there. What does everyone here get for a single battery voltage as well as a full pack voltage after full charge? Do the batteries degrade like this in only two years? One chart shows that these numbers equate to batteries that are at 70% of brand new. Thanks for the assistance. |

Re: New member, dead battery cell and voltage concerns
You should load test all of the batteries. If the one with weak cell load tests badly (which it probably will) you need to replace the battery. There is no way to fix a bad cell. In most cases, batteries last around 4 years. Some more, some less depending on how they are treated and used. The fact that your cart has 2014 batteries in a 2012 cart says the first ones only lasted 2 years so maybe the previous owner did not treat them well at all. If you have a bad battery, you have a decision to make:
Find a single used battery (or new) or replace all of them with new. |

Does your charger automatically turn off after charging?

Re: New member, dead battery cell and voltage concerns
Since it turns off I would say that you have a bad battery. If it didn't turn off I would suspect an unbalanced pack and an equalization charge might help. You might want to try that anyway. Next time the the charger finishes charging unplug the DC cord and plug it right back in again and let it go through its cycle. See if that helps. Also can you verify that the batteries are 2014. See if there is some kind of date stamp on the battery.

Re: New member, dead battery cell and voltage concerns
First off are you ABSOLUTELY sure the batteries are from 2014 we had had some folks told they were buying a 2012 cart with 2014 batteries when in fact they were 2012's.... Also what brand of batteries? Stock OE Power Drive batteries can start failing between 2 and 3 years old...
The info from these guys is spot on too... |

Re: New member, dead battery cell and voltage concerns
Double check your Specific Gravity. A SG of 1.00 means its plain water. Even a 0% battery will indicate 1.1.

Check the MFG info on the top of your batteries to find the MFG date.

Re: New member, dead battery cell and voltage concerns
A lot of people confuse the date code on a battery with the date that the batteries were sold or installed.
Most manufacturers will place a sticker on the battery case as well as imprint the side of the top of the battery with the actual date code ("Born On" date). It will be a letter followed by a single digit. The letter represents the month and the digit is the last digit of the year. A=January, B=February, etc. 0=2010, 1=2011, 2=2012, 3=2013, etc. |
