Default Brakes Locking Up

Installed a lift on my 91 Marathon and everything was working fine for the past few weeks with no off roading invloved at all. Then all of a sudden my brakes became real touchy and lock up with the slightest pressure applied. I have gone over the cables, tensioners and everything seems fine. I even lifted the card off the ground and they free wheel with no lag on the brakes. Both tires lock up.

By the way, it works perfect in reverse

Any ideas?
Thanks
Cuz

Might need to pull the drums and check the shoes. They can so thin and the adjusters out so far that this will happen.

I was just in the process of doing so... I un-hooked one brake at a time and narrowed it down to the driver side.
Now, how do you get the drums off? Looks to me like its splined and I need a wheel puller?

Thanks

Bang 'em, heat'em, talk dirty to them, whatever. They will come off eventually, hopefully in one piece. Depends on the size of the hammer!

Adjust the shoes all the way back in before you start talking dirty to them

...yeah, what HE said!

It's also a good idea to make sure the hill brake is not applied when trying to remove the hubs!

Hey Cuz, I ran across this problem a few weeks back on a cart that was brought in. Slightest brake pressure and they locked tight. Put it in reverse and they worked fine. Here was the culprit. The customer had installed the wrong lift on the rear. When you applied the brakes. The axle was actually rotating a bit on the springs, seeing that the cables go to the bottom of the brake plate. The rotation of the axle was actully pulling the brakes tighter. We fixed the lift and no more problems. Lock your hill break and then go to the rear of the cart and start rocking the cart forward and back. If your motor is moving forward when you push, thats your problem. Hope this helps.

Thats just what my 91 EZGO freedom is doing after i installed a 5 inch lift kit. The brakes are real touchy and will grab and throw you off. I have adjusted everything ( including backing off star nut)and about ready to buy new shoes and cables?? I do believe the rear axle is twisting when brake is applied.

So how do you fix this problem???

THANKS

Smile Re: Brakes Locking Up

The lift is a custom "block" 5 inch lift. I made the lift myself after looking at the economy lift kits for about $100 i decided i could make it.

After reading the other replies i am almost certain the rearend is twisting when the brakes are applied.

So my question is there a work around for the problem? stiffer springs ?

I did put new shocks all the away around.

THANKS
