Question G2A knocking noise

Hi,

I'm a new owner of a 91 G2A. The cart ran smooth and has a lot of power, till about two weeks ago when it started making this knocking noise about 30 seconds from starting it. Sometimes, it comes to a rough stop when I try to slow down.

I pulled the carb, soaked it overnight, clean it, then put it back. Changed the air filter but the noise is still there... maybe a bit worse. Anyone thoughts what might be causing this? Thanks!!!

my first posting.... Awesome forum. Glad to join you'all.

thank you for the prompt reply...

It could be the clutch, but the knocking noise is there even when the clutch belt was removed.. Would the clutch still cause the noise even then? It almost sound like the engine valves, but normally the valves normally have steady continuous sound.. this noise is somehow irregular

Not sure here, but I think that the problem might have been triggered by filling up the tank by with 5 month old gas. I since drained the gas tank (cleaned the carb) and replaced it with fresh gas.
I'm handy with small engines. I work on my bike when needed, but totally new to golf carts... any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Make sure there is 1 quart of oil in the engine, some dip sticks were mis-marked. I think I would remove the valve cover and inspect the rockers. Set valves at .004" at TDC cold.

You may want to take the primary clutch cap off and inspect the three weights. Later Dave

Welcome to the BGW. Can you tell if the knocking is coming from the engine area or axle area? If from the engine area, I agree with smallblock, check your drive clutch. Pull the cover and make sure nothing is broken and if not, spread a little grease on all moving parts. Be careful when removing the screws holding on the clutch cover. They may be seized and you don't won't to strip them. WD-40 and use a good screwdriver and tap the screwdriver a couple of times if they are seized. I have also used a screw driver bit in a 1/4 socket with a 1/4 inch drive ratchet before. The best thing for seized screws is one of the drivers you tap with a hammer and it twists as you hit it. I think you can pick these up at a parts store.

check your drive clutch expesially the bushing were it slides. try to shake clutch a little to see if there is any play. if there is the bushing is bad. it will cause a rattling noise.

The noise is definitely coming from the engine.
The knocking sound is still there even after I removed the drive belt and ran the engine... (this is a silly question to most of you) could the drive clutch still be the culprit even if the drive belt is taking off and trans is neutral?
