Confused about rattle can timing
I've been reading all of the threads about rattle can painting and I think I have all of the steps figured out but I can't find anything on the time between each step or what grit to use for sanding. I will be painting my EZGO soon and it sounds like Rustoleum is the way to go. Here's what I THINK I know so far:
1. Sand with What Grit? 2. Clean 3. Primer 4. Sand with What Grit? 5. Clean 6. Primer (how long between coats?) 7. Sand with What Grit? 8. Clean 9. Clean 10. Clean 11. Paint 12. Sand with What Grit? 13. Clean 14. Clean 15. Paint 16. Sand with What Grit? 17. Clean 18. Clean 19. Paint (how long between coats?) 20. Sand with What Grit? 21. Clean 22. Clean 23. Clear coat (how long after final paint coat?) 24. Wet sand with What Grit? (how long after clear coat?) |

Re: Confused about rattle can timing
150 should scuff a plastic body enough to get primer to stick. It is also good for blocking and feathering between primer coats. Use 220 after the final primer coat before paint. Wet sand with 1500 grit between paint coats. Use 2500 on the final paint coat before clear. 3000 after clear and then polishing compound. Wait until each layer is well cured before sanding. There is no hard & fast rule for how long to wait. Different products have different hardening rates. I am nearly done with my quicie respray after almost a week. It isn't perfect, but it is soooooo much better than it was.

Re: Confused about rattle can timing
So these are just my personal opinions on you're questions. Others will certainly have their own.
1. Sand with What Grit? - maroon scotchbrite 2. Clean 3. Primer 4. Sand with What Grit? - no need 5. Clean 6. Primer (how long between coats?) - depends on temp but usually about 15 to 20 min 7. Sand with What Grit? - 400-600 wet sand 8. Clean 9. Clean 10. Clean 11. Paint 12. Sand with What Grit? - no need unless you have a ton of debris in it 13. Clean - tack cloth 14. Clean - skip 15. Paint 16. Sand with What Grit? - again no need unless you have debris 17. Clean - tack cloth 18. Clean - skip 19. Paint (how long between coats?) - same as before depending on temp 20. Sand with What Grit? - no need unless you have more debris than you would like. The reason I say no sanding the color is rattle can paint is so thin you will basically sand off the whole coat you put on trying to smooth it out. 21. Clean - tack cloth 22. Clean - skip 23. Clear coat (how long after final paint coat?) - one fog coat to start after a couple hours of dry time and then lay them on regular after that. 24. Wet sand with What Grit? (how long after clear coat?) - 1500 to 2000. wait at least a day. And remember don't sand anywhere you cannot safely get a buffer into like inside radiuses. |
