Update, I bypassed the wiring harness completely running jumper wires directly from the generator to the regulator per the wiring diagram in my manual. I got the same results. Very large current in the DF wire. I guess that I need to find to find a site that explains generator charging systems. Its tough to diagnose the problem when I don't understand how it works.

Really, you just need to add a ballast resistor to that wire and your problems will be solved.
