Default Re: Wiring lights on a cart.

Sorry everybody I'm very new at this. I've developed a new problem now. All 4 lights have a ground wire that is grounded to the cart at each light location. When I ran a wire directly from the positive terminal on the battery to one of the 3 prongs on the switch the lights came on when I turned on the switch. In running this wire I bypassed the fuse completely. Then I ran around in the cart for awhile and decided to try the lights with the key on cart running and in seconds the hot wire got really hot, melted the casing, jumped off the cart, turned off the key and ripped the wire off the positive terminal ( I hate the smell of burning plastic). So I need help. Forget everything I've said about wiring these lights and take me back to square one. Spoon feed me. Thanks in advance for any help.

sounds to me like you had grounded the light switch and that's where all your problems came from, I asked about it in your other thread but I got no reply.

Melted hot wires? Could it be that the amps from the battery are too much of a load on the wiring? Seems like using a higher gauge wire may help, too. 16 gauge marine cable is what I use. On the other hand, what ruredy had said, if you grounded the light control you may have made a short in the wiring.

I'm not sure of your setup, but something else came to mind. Do you draw right off your battery? Or though your solenoid? I would assume that hard wiring to the battery, with no fuse box, and not though the cart's power system, would be unwise.

I have seen some lights done with 8 gauge wire, giving a very strong current. I've also seen some lights done with uh... I don't even know where the wire came from... I assume it was some kind of really thin speaker wire, and the wires melted down and overheaded. To many AMPS though it.

A heavier cable won't cause things to start overheating. What causes things to overheat is SHORTS. Also a wire that is too small WILL also get hot if it cant supply enough power. Start by taking everything OFF and starting over.

Heres a good example of light wiring that uses a relay.

Roady89 if you re-read what I said, you will see that I stated correct facts.
I suggested a heavier gauge (~14-16 gauge) cable. I also suggested a fuse box.
If he used improper, light cable, and hardwired it to the battery, he could have wire melting issues.

You need to stop answering questions you know nothing about. This is the second or third time your post's have been questionable. (That I have read.) Stack that on all the bad advice you have given and your time here is short lived. It seems you are just here to stir the pot so to speak. CYA!
