Default Is 42 volts worth it

My 36 V ez go golf cart is having trouble with its charger I'm considering buying a new charger so I'm wondering if stepping up to a 42 V system at the same time is worth the money since I will need to charger anyway I already have an altrax controller it would be very simple to upgrade if I'm already upgrading the charger. All I would need is one extra 6 V battery in the cables. My batteries are two years old and they were the Trojan 6 V

Scotty b charger looks like 285
I Trojan 6v 125 (local)

48v is not better for every motor and drive system. Statistics show 36v Sepex motors like the PDS and DCS Ezgo have a reduced useful life on 48v but 42v enhances performance by 17% without the unwanted shorter life. And in fact giving longer run time, more torque, speed, and lower operating temperatures.

I'm in the same boat, I need a charger. My cart has the following:

500a alltrax controller
Admiral motor
23" tires

Not sure what to do. I'd love to buy a new 48v pack but mine is only 2 years old and I take pretty good care of them. My wife would kill me if I spent all the money on new batteries right now.

Some random thoughts and information.

The charger, solenoid and controller have to work at whatever the pack voltage is.

Alltrax controllers work at 36V, 42V and 48V, so if you have one, it'll work if you upgrade the battery pack to 42V or 48V.

The 48V Super-Duty (400A) solenoid Scotty sells works at 36V, 42V and 48V, so if you have one of those, you won't have to replace the solenoid when you upgrade from 36V to 42V or 48V.

You will have to replace the charger. The 42V DPI Accusense charger I'm using can be upgraded to 48V by replacing the output board, so when I go to 48V (if a ever do), converting my 42V charger to a 48V charger will cost me about $120 instead of about $285 for a new 48V charger.

When you add a new seventh battery to an existing 36V battery pack, the new battery will quickly age to the age of the existing batteries, so it must be replaced at the same time the existing batteries are replaced.

-------------
Going to 42V is all a lot of carts need and it is also a good stepping stone for going to 48V at a later date.

Based upon what I'm reading here I'd go for it. You've got the right controller, not sure if you have the right solenoid but like OP said, one charger and one battery and it's a go. Worst case is also a new solenoid. Now, where have I seen a wiring diagram for a 42v system....

Do I need to make any changes to the program in the Alltrax?

The control works in a range of 36 to 48v
Default program is 22-55v
Unless specifically programmed for 36v it will work on 42 or 48v

It will run, but you'll need to adjust the under and over voltage settings if you get any under/over voltage errors while running.

Of course, you'll probably want to do some tweaking once you get the feel of how the cart performs at a higher voltage.
