88 Club Car CarryAll Gx340 to Pred 420 Swap
My Father In-Law Bought a 420 Predator to replace his GX340.
When we pulled the 340 we saw that when looking at the output shaft on the 340 it looked like there were 2 flat spots where the Clutch goes on? Is this a tapered shaft 340? Are we gonna need a different clutch? (the Predator 420 has a 1 inch key, round, output shaft) Or am I missing something ? We have tried to get the clutch off to verify the output shaft config but cant' get it off. Do we even bother if it's not the same as the 420? |

Re: 88 Club Car CarryAll Gx340 to Pred 420 Swap
Most all carts use a 30mm taper, it requires a puller to get it off, usually a big bolt that goes in and pushes it off the crank. They use the same type of taper on small engine flywheels, outboards, etc. You can get an adapter to go on the 420 1" shaft so the stock clutch fits on it. That is typical way to do it if you want to use the stock clutch or need to because you are keeping the starter/gen. You can get a new 780 from Vegas and they have a pulley that mounts behind it (on the 1" with no adapters), otherwise you need a stock or stock replacement clutch to get the pulley.
Oh I see, you are saying you have a gx340 in there now. So either it has a 1" shaft with the stock CC clutch on it with an adapter....or its some unknown and not standard setup hard to say what that would be. If it has an adapter you might be able to see it stick out the back side, it looks like a collet maybe 1/8" thick. If the taper is inside more you might not see it, and the shaft would be 1" going into the clutch. IF it has something else, hard to say what it would be. Most all clutches use a taper or straight shaft and key. Other things would be not normal. There are adapters that fit a 3/4 crank into a taper clutch or 1" straight clutch, that is only other thing I have seen used that is common sort of. Some 10hp size engines or less use 3/4 crank instead of 1". |
