Default Stock 88ezgo gas, runs only with constant choke adjusting

I picked this unit up last year, my first. i tore carb down, soaked it in cleaner and put a rebuild kit in it. ir ran ok but not necessarily stellar but did not need to use choke like now. Started it yesterday since last fall. New fuel, it ran well for an hour, now I must monkey with the choke to get it to run. Good spark, fuel filters(2) appear clean and air filter is a year old and looks good Any ideas? Thanks

Maybe bad seals around crank sucking air?

Can this be checked by spraying WD40 into the fan?

maybe behind fan, where the crank comes though the casting.

WD40 had no effect. I have compression of 65-70 which is borderline I think. I will put new rings in but am afraid to complicate things until I figure out the choke thing. i appreciate any and all advice/observations!

I consider that compression to be fairly low could run if everything else was right. I would open it up and replace rings crank seals and all the gaskets. Then go from there. You'll know all that is good and if there is any serious interior motor problems you'll find them now instead of later. I tore mine down to refresh it and found a cracked piston.

it's actually pretty common to suck minute particles into the carb and partially plug a jet, I know personally I tear down the carb on MY 88 and clean it out at least once a month or so during riding season to keep it running top-notch (granted, i do a LOT of dusty trail riding as well as fields, etc so there's never any shortage of particulate crud flying around) ... It's a fast 15min to pull the carb and remove the jets, blow them out good with carb cleaner and compressed air and pop it all back together, prob worth a try.

Crank seals, BTW are rarely a "sorta going" thing, they're either good or not good - You're running at ALL, which leads me to believe they're not the culprit here. As to the compression, YOU sir are definitely past the point of needing a top end rebuild. Personally, I'd pop the $200 for a new top end (it's an easy 2hr job to do) and as long as You're doing it, go ahead and pop a $10 set of crank seals in just because (again, I always do when I rebuild a 2-stroke just to ensure I don't have to do them later).
