Question 1995 EZ-Go Medalist Differential Problem

I recently bought a '95 EZ-Go electric Medalist. It's my first golf cart and I don't know a lot about them. The cart didn't run when I bought it, and the guy said it needed batteries. I bought new batteries and cables and it's up and running. The problem is there's a rubbing, scratchy kind of noise coming from what I assume is the differential in the rear end. What would be likely to cause this? Does it just need oil? If so, where is the oil fill tube/hole on this model's differential? (I see the drain plug on the bottom) Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to BGW!

The fill tube/plug is mid-ways, about halfway up on the left side, rear side of the axle.

It will make "some" noise but not at a level that you notice as something is wrong. I would suggest changing the gear oil. I prefer full synthetic but others use different weights of dino oil. I guess its up to you. I don't think they use an 80/90 gear oil, I think they use more along the lines of a 30wt HD oil. (High detergent)

Thanks for the quick responses everyone. I got the oil changed, and it helped a little. It didn't seem to help much, but I'll keep looking. Thanks again.

Guilty as charged..

Hog--

Your noise may also be a motor problem, the bearings can cause a constant rough sound, or the brushes can even be making a rough scratching sound if they are almost bad.

Your rear axle bearings can cause these noises as well.

Rear ends are rarely bad, usually something else is the problem..

I've seen more bad motor bearings than anything. Once the bearings are out you can deffinately tell when you spin or attempt to spin the bearings.
