Default 85 marathon battery drains, voltage regulator?

I’m having an issue with my battery draining after a short time while operating my 1985 EzGo gasser. The battery is new and tested fine it never drains completely just to the point where the voltage is too low to start the cart. I checked all the grounds and they are good, the green wire is good, good solenoid and so on. Now when the cart is running the voltage coming from the generator is jumping all over the place 12 to 18v it never stops. I checked the battery lead while running and it’s doing the same thing at the battery. The generator should be sending out power so could it be the voltage regulator that’s bad? I’m at a loss so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you remove the green cable from the generator (DF) and start the engine (with the axle jacked up) the voltage on the battery should be 12 volts. If you ground the wire to the chassis the battery should read 18 volts. If this does not happen then the regulator is defective.

You probably have some burnt and pitted points in there so it might be worth opening it up and having a look. BTW if you do remove the wire place a thin wrench under the wire or I guarantee you will twist the stud and rip the wire out of the inside of the generator
