Winter Upgrades / 23hp Vanguard?
I currently have a 23 hp Brigs with the rev kit and cam. I am looking to upgrade the carb, air cleaner and manifold along with a muffler that breathes more. All bought from Tom at CPP!
Is there a standard upgrade that is rule of thumb or at least what the main stream does as an upgrade to what I have? Thanks for your time |

Flint, Smallblock, and BBM will be along shortly Mark.........
If I'm not mistaken, they're going to get you into a Mikuni carb, maybe twins |

first upgrade i would suggest, is a drive belt. you're not going to go anywhere without one
a pulley on the transmission would be another safe bet :D |

Re: Winter Upgrades / 23hp Vanguard?
What headers are you running? Those carbs are tricky. There is a company out there (EC Distributing in Tenn) that can modify your stocker from mild to wild, not cheap. I feel safe in recommending the set up I have, single TM38 Mikuni, KN and carb adapter from Alpha Carts here in Texas. Again not cheap, and you may have few headaches with clearance depending on your lift and cradle height. Take a look at the last few pages for some more info: http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/big-b...mond-ruff.html then ask any questions you have!

Re: Winter Upgrades / 23hp Vanguard?
Go dig around on some of the lawnmower racing forums, they seem to be most in to modding them. Bigger carb & intake, head work, more compression, advance timing, headers, seem to be the key issues if you have a cam now. I don't see how a flywheel helps much with a CVT, unless you are exceeding safe rpm of a stock one.
Clutching is another issue, has anyone run their big block on a dyno? We used to do that all the time on sleds so you could clutch them properly, makes a huge difference if you use all the power you are making. All you did is pop the primary off and strap the dyno on. Then again sleds run on the CVT most all the time while carts shift out too soon. A higher ratio unit sure would be nice. And sure these have a much wider powerband than sleds so its not as critical....but if you are racing the guys it can be. I'm trying to learn about the carbs. They can be setup better but it sure looks like they are a lawnmower carb and just not that good at throttling. I look to move to a MC type carb when I can. I have the stock carb on this 16hp working ok but I can see its limitations, it was made to run on a governor. |

Re: Winter Upgrades / 23hp Vanguard?
I guess the awnser for me was, do I want only idle or full rpm? Mid range was a hesitation and bogging. So, I also started a thread. It was so helpfull. I talked to the people at EC, very nice and helpfull, did they offer a "cure" at that time... no, also searched "mud buggies?", very cool, but very expensive. Would I go "twins" again, probably not. Would I try the kit from Alpha, probably, but Flint can tell you much more then I can about that. I would like to see a kit like Alpha's, with the carb/adapter to the fan side of the engine ( better cooling), but would it fit? Depends on the cart, would it fisically fit? Keep us posted, we all want a better running cart. I enjoy BGW so much because members ask questions and we all try to help.

Re: Winter Upgrades / 23hp Vanguard?
Sooo then it is not as simple as, Example
For 6hp increase do the following proven upgrades. Super trap part # 000001 Two Barrel Carb part # 347577 Two Barrel manifold part # 347566 Sort of like Harley Davidson does with their motorcycle upgrades, Stage 1, Stage 2 and so on. |
