I tried searching the threads... Oil?
Hi all,
Thanks for the recent help. I purchased a fairly tired '86 club car carryall (thought it was an 87 at first) It obviously has some time on it, although it was sitting for a while. It runs GREAT. I want to change the oil in it, it seems to have some water in it. I noticed a small amount of smoke but only once. The question: Which oil type should I put in it? (The old flathead) and I am sure it has a huge # of hours on it. 5W-20? at least for the summer? I think there is a sticker on the engine suggesting this, but I am away from it at the moment. Thanks in advance! |

If it was mine I would want 10/30 synthetic in it.

I didn't see any 10/30 recommendations on that sticker that was on the engine. I thought 5w20 would help it smoke less. No?

Re: I tried searching the threads... Oil?
5w-20 is a thinner viscosity oil, it'll probably smoke more!
In most small engines, (including Club Cars) SAE 30 is usually recomended, and synthetic might be a better choice for you! |

Re: I tried searching the threads... Oil?
Sorry... I was wrong.... the higher the number, the thinner the oil! for some reason... I was thinking 20w-50...(dyslexia must have kicked in!) BUT... SAE 30 synthetic is what I use! and, now for the disclaimer: I... anyone on this forum, or... BGW itself, is/are NOT responsible for your actions in the result of using, or misusing this information that may cause possible damage to yourself, or your property! |

Re: I tried searching the threads... Oil?
Okay, sounds good...
Would synthetic, or a thicker oil be better for any cart? Just this one because it is an older cart? Again, although it runs great, I am assuming it is a tired engine. The hour meter shows 2,400 but I highly doubt thats accurate. Right now it I've got a gray, watery mess of oil. I don't even want to move it until I get it changed, so I guess I am going with 10w-30 synthetic unless anyone stops me before this afternoon/tonight... Thanks all! Rob |

The bigger the number the thicker the oil becomes

You'll be fine with 10w-30...
I get confused at 3:30 in the morning! http://www.upmpg.com/tech_articles/motoroil_viscosity/ I'll shut up now! |
