42v Western to 48v
Friend put 6 - 8v batts instead of 7 - 6v
In his Western 42 v cart. Says it picked up some speed & ran it for 18 holes. 95 , 97 ? model, Think the older 42 westerns are 36V motors & controllers . Think he may burn up solenoid & controller Or Is it a cheap upgrade? (+ only need to buy 6 batts) |

Re: 42v Western to 48v
how is he going to charge the 48 volt battery pack? I assume his charger is 42 volts as that is what he had before putting in the wrong batteries. I have two 42v western carts and they are currently faster than many 48 volt carts in my neighborhood.

Re: 42v Western to 48v
Trouble is the surface charge. When charging the 48v pack it will get to 59+ volts in the finish phase. So if he hops in and hits the gas 30 minutes after a charge cycle completed then his cart that is set up for 42+v will see 59-ish volts. Or, he may have a controller and solenoid that are 48v compatible and be OK.
It'll either be fine or let all the magic smoke out of the controller/solenoid. I know it's not answering your question, maybe someone else can chime in that knows this stuff. You do want to be careful with the max RPM of the motor, I don't know how fast he was going on 48v. There are a few members who've exploded a motor by spinning it over 6k and it normally takes out the controller when the motor goes like that. |

Re: 42v Western to 48v
I think the older Western’s have 36 v
controller . They made a 42 volt charger , Added a battery.. Wa-La.. a good 6 volt upgrade. Some controllers are 36 to 48v This one ,I think is a 36 v controller. Looks like a 0-5k speed control? (Not sure when EZ went ITS) .. But his test (so far) shows that some of the older carts had some skookum 36v controllers . |
