I have been having the same problem on my 79. I adjusted the float tab so the floats would close sooner, but after that it run for a couple minutes and start dieing out. so I adjusted back and it was ok. I took it out a week after that and now its flooding out of the carb like it did the first time. I did find a manual on this site and it tells you how to adjust the floats correctly, I haven't done it yet but I will soon.

Check to make sure you do not have a leaking float that slowly fills with fuel and will not float up to close needle.

I just had same problem with my 87. The float was slowly sinking. I bought a new carb from bakers cart suply for 70 or 80 bucks. You can't buy a float for these carbs. Rebuild kits don't even come with them. I did have to adjust float on new carb though.
