Is a momentary break in voltage a deal killer?

In another thread I'm proposing to switch a 12v boost battery into series with the 48v pack at wide open throttle only on jy PDS cart. This will mean that I use a contactor and there will be a split second that there is loss of voltage to the controller as the contactor switches to 60v from 48v. Does anyone know if that momentary lapse in current is enough to damage the controller or will it be ok?

I'm figuring that I am going to be the test case on this one but it never hurts to ask.

If your throttle is engaged and the controller looses power, when the controller comes back online it will not operate because the throttle is already engaged. I believe this is called "high pedal disable" or something similar.

Yes I think this would be correct. But with some controllers this can be turned off.

what about possible damage to your motor input or gears when this momentary lost of power then instant high power happens?

I may be wrong here, but the time it takes a contactor to open or close is almost instantaneous. You are already moving so it's not like full power from a dead start. I believe you will have quite an arc inside the contactor, so I wouldn't expect a long life from it's contacts, but I don't believe you will harm the controller.

G, there is "high pedal disable" function that is settable...is that a word?...on my controller so I don't think that will be an issue.

Wiltz, no danger of breaking anything in the drivetrain. The cart will be well underway by the time that the esxtra voltage is applied and it's only adding 25% more than it has already.

I'm thinkin' that #4 is the most likely with #3 running a close second.

Whether or not you do this .... I wanted to be the first......

I think it will be okay but it would be worth the call to the manufacture's engineering dept.

so the cart will always have power, can you wire it like this, -- you can leave the pack wired like it is supposed to be, and wire in the 12v battery with a contactor to jump in the pack giving it 55 something volts at WOT, and it will never lose power, ?

That's how we are looking at it but with the voltage going to 60 volts it will go into high voltage over load at 60 volts.

Now here is another question Terry, can you sett the over voltage to anything higher on the controller? Scrap that just looked at Alltrax page 60 v max input.
