Hi all new member with G16 clutch problems.
I've been lurking for quite some time but just joined today. Last night I was working on my G16 yamaha and almost lost my left eye. We have had issues with the cart in the past and replaced many parts. The latest issue was the clutch. We had I guess you would call it a roller (piece of metal that stops the weight from flying out of the clutch) crack. we noticed it while we were having problems with bogging which was caused by new cables mis adjusted.
Well my buddy hit the peddle so I could check the adjustment on the peddle and the clutch cover was off. the clutch blew up! 2 weights flew off the cast aluminum/pot metal main part of the clutch that the weights connect to shattered and metal flew everywhere. I was adjusting the cable via the rear hatch and got hit in the side of the head , ear and under my eye. I looked up the price of a new clutch online and its 1/3 the price I paid for the cart! Is there a source for clutches that dont cost over $300???? Untill I fix that I cant even begin to deal with the other issues. This golf cart tows a drag car. |

Re: Hi all new member with G16 clutch problems.
A buddy of mine has a used one, the rollers are worn but not broken. He wants 70.00 plus shipping. You can buy the rollers for 60.00 on e-bay but it should last awhile without replacing them. We are at 37601 north east Tn. just let me know.

Re: Hi all new member with G16 clutch problems.
I'm curious about a clutch upgrade also. The rollers on my primary all have flat spots, but I keep them greased so the weights still slide for now. I'd be willing to spend the $$ for a good clutch if it made towing the drag car that much easier, is it worth it?
BTW glad you didn't lose the eye, yikes! |

You can try to score an older Comet on FleaBay, but often they are set up differently than what you need. Clutch performance is key to your cart enjoyment (and safety!) and good one's cost some bucks. The guys at CPP know their stuff here, and if you have to spend the money might as well upgrade the performance.........

From one new member to another, I am glad you still have your peeper! This is a good reminder to all to wear your safety glasses ("let's talk about shop safety" - Norm Abrams) and remember that even though these are just carts, they are still machines that can cause us flesh wearing folk some serious damage. ;)

Thanks for the heads up Lurch. I will sleep on it tonight and let you know tomorrow. On one hand I know I should just spend the cash and do a good clutch purpose built for my application. On the other hand the cart has lasted 5 years and was only a grand. The guy we use for carts treats us really well. Trying to decide on fixing this one with another bandaid , dump money into it or just get another used one. |

Bad, glad your all right! It all comes down to maint. fix it right the first time, and you'll hardly ever touch it again. Maybe go through it maintenance wise in the off season.

Re: Hi all new member with G16 clutch problems.
I just put new rollers in my stock clutch, but the driven clutch is where I spent my money. I went with Plowmans 2 sheaves, spring and there belt it should make a huge difference in the torque. 60.00 front, 160.00 rear!!!!!!!

Re: Hi all new member with G16 clutch problems.
I really dont know much about working on golf carts. I will mast likely take that clutch Lurch as long as it is currently functioning. Just so I can go through the whole cart and fix everything. We have the slower than an old dog Club car in the trailer now which is functioning anyway.
If you would like to message me your contact info I can Paypal you or mail you a payment. What ever works best for you and your buddy. |
