The #s on the tag are as follows

In the first box 81C17 then the second box is 223794

Mine came up as invalid as well, thought I might be missing a digit or something. It seems like the general rule around here is that a lot of times the year is right in the serial number. Mine has an 80 in it, which so far seems likely. Yours has 81, so that's what I would guess.

Raymond, welcome to the forum, herein is the source of all knowledge.

Here are a few more pointers to the date of your cart.

Look under the front are there two springs running front to rear or one transverse spring? Two springs equals later than 1979.
It is older than 1988 when EZGO started with a rubber nacelle.
If it has a horizontal muffler it is 1983 (this was the one year they did this until 1989 when they introduced a modified engine).
Look under the seat do you see an external starter/generator? If so this is good news as there is a veritable plethora of parts available for your engine. I mention this as it is not unknown for the pre 1980 engine to be transplanted into an 80's series cart and there are no parts available for that engine.

Enjoy your cart
Dave
