ds solenoid-hot resistor-won't run

I have a '96 club car ds 48 volt. Batteries have full charge and after a one mile drive the car rested for 1 hour then I drove it about 40 ft and stopped. When I tried to engage to motor again I felt a small "bump" coming from the motor as if there was insufficient voltage. The shielded capacitor on the solenoid under the passenger seat is quite warm. I am a competent mechanic but appreciate any and all suggestions including diagnostics. Thanks in advance for the help. Bob T.

If the resistor is hot it sounds like the solenoid is not closing inside.

You are talking about the resistor between the two large posts on the solenoid right?

This is almost always the result of a failed controller. If a controller fails and tries to draw power when it shouldn't (when the solenoid is open/disengaged) the power has no choice but to pass through the resistor. The resistor can't handle that kind of a draw, so it gets hot.

Same thing, no? The resistor tries to feed the controller. Yikes - Smoking hot!

It is the large resistor between the two posts on top of the solenoid. Can I test by using a jumper between the posts to close the circuit on the solenoid. I do not hear any click when I turn the key and depress the accelerator pedal. Could it just be a bad solenoid. A few months ago after a several mile ride at high speed the car went dead for a couple of minutes and then revived and no trouble until today???

another piece of the puzzle- the resistor cools off in a couple of minutes when the the pedal is not depressed

If the resistor is heating up ONLY when the pedal is depressed, it's very possible that the controller is fine and the solenoid (or solenoid activation circuit) is the issue. If the resistor is heating up ALL THE TIME, it's a more serious issue like I mentioned above.

Thank you David I will try tapping on the solenoid once I verify voltage at the unit. If the solenoid is getting power then can I assume the solenoid activation circuit is functioning?

could I test the solenoid by putting a jumper cable across the top terminals?
