Default Compression & Leakdown test results

Hi all, I did a couple of engine tests to my 96 EZGO (295cc) today as my engine is a "light smoker".

dry compression test results...

Battery fully charged 12.56v
Engine warmed up to operating temp
Air filter removed and butterfly valve fully open
Both cylinders @ 155psi

I removed both plugs to perform the test and did not realize that process was incorrect. I will redo tomorrow & perform a wet test as well, but will it really make a difference with one plug in / out?

leakdown test results...

Engine still warm
removed dipstick, air filter removed, valve cover off to ensure valves are closed and piston(s) at TDC
Cylinder 1 (driver side) 22% leakage - could hear air escaping past the piston rings into the block
Cylinder 2 (pass side) 25% leakage - could hear air escaping past the piston rings into the block

What are your thoughts on the readings and where is my oil consumption coming from? Could it be through the valve seals or is it most likely just getting past the rings (blow by)?

Thanks for any input!

One of the ways you determine if your problems are rings or valves is with a dry and wet compression test. The service tech manual tells you the proper way to do the test and how to interpret the results

Well , I decided to start all over. Remember, this engine burns a little oil and will smoke more at WOT than any other position. All tests performed with engine warm.

Adjusted valves - found them to be out of adjustment. Now set @ .004 (slight drag)

Compression Test

Driver Side
140psi DRY
165psi WET

Pass Side
155psi DRY
180psi WET

Leakdown Test

Driver Side
33%

Pass Side
56%

Think it would be wise to go ahead and rebuild this now? The smoking is annoying, but how do the numbers look to anyone else?

Does anyone make a kit I can buy or do I have to piece it together part by part?

Thanks

140 psi is getting low, and the wet/oil test improved it so the rings are soft or the bore is wore. the leak down test proves that air is get threw some were but its probably a combo of rings and valves, theres full kits out there but most likely the head will valve guides and the kits that i know of don't address the head.

Thanks, I found a rebuild kit at one of the site sponsers here http://www.cartszone.com/ezenginerebuildkits.asp

I could hear the air passing past the rings into the crankcase and not leaking through the valves (did not come out the carb or exhaust). Guess I'm gonna go ahead and pull the motor and disassemble to inspect. I think if I need to go with full rebuild, I'll have to seriously consider a Big Block.

a lot of times the bearings and crankshaft are reuseable! so a set of rods, rings, valves and seals will get you going for a long time.
a briggs v twin would feal good to...
