Default how does battery stay charged in ez go gas???

Just recently got a 84 ez go gas cart and was wondering how the battery stays charged? my 12v batt. dies after a couple of hours. My starter says starter generator on it is that some type of charger? just a lil confused

Yes, the starter has two wires leaving it that eventually run to a voltage regulator and then back to the battery for a charge.

That's correct. Any dc motor (for example your starter motor) will become a generator when driven. So once the engine starts it drives the starter which generates dc current and charges the battery.

Now if you suspect that your battery is not being charged then that could be the generator or the regulator so here is how to find out.

Connect a dc voltmeter across the battery, it should read ~ 12 volts. Start the engine and the meter should read ~ 14-15 volts. If it does not remove the thin green wire from the starter/generator terminal DF. Use a wrench under the wire to ensure that the stud does not turn. Now start the engine and observe the voltage which should be ~12 volts. With the engine running ground the green wire and observe the voltage. If it rises to 18 volts the generator is at fault. If it stays at 12 volts the regulator needs to be replaced.
