New Drive2 carts have a delayed start when hot
We got some new 2021 Yamaha Drive2 Quiet Tech carts in NC.
It is 90 degrees here and after the carts have gone a round of golf and sit for 10 minutes or so they will not start up quickly but will take up to 6 seconds to start. You can smell gas fumes like they are flooded. Never had gas carts and they get SO HOT in engine compartment that you cannot lay your hand on air filter. Got Yamaha tech coming next week but you guys have any ideas or similar experience? Thanks |

Re: New Drive2 carts have a delayed start when hot
When gas engines get hot they can get "vapor lock" which is the gasoline getting so hot that it evaporates inside the fuel lines or carburator. The 6 seconds of cranking is getting fresh cooler fuel into the carb.
Now if that engine is getting hotter than it's supposed to? That's another conversation. I have a laser temp gun that I use to check temps, maybe give that a try and see where the engine is getting hot. If it's from the exhaust, maybe the cart is running lean, that can create a glowing red exhaust pipe. Gas engines get pretty hot, especially air cooled ones. Air temps, humidity, load all have an affect on operating temps. I've seen the top end of air cooled engines reach 300 degrees. Air flow is super important on air cooled engines, so if the engine isn't moving they will run hotter. The faster the ground speed the more wind can help cool the engine. But they are designed to run sitting still. Is this cart air cooled or water cooled? |

Air cooled. These are 2021 models brand new this week I have the Yamaha tech coming next week I just wanted to be able to ask right questions. The heat in the engine compartment is extreme in my opinion but I have only dealt with electric carts for 27 years.

Re: New Drive2 carts have a delayed start when hot
And would these be carb or EFI? QuietTech?
And just as a test, if they all are doing it flip the seat up for 5 minutes on a single cart and try that one. Would cool off quicker. |

I also read where adding Mystery Motor oil to gas (2oz per 10 gallons of gas) can help with vapor lock. Thoughts on that?

Does the vapor lock apply to the efi engines that was explained earlier?

Re: New Drive2 carts have a delayed start when hot
Carb carts have a fuel bowl right next to the block. EFI doesn’t need that but the fuel in the hoses can do this.
