Default Anyone ever shorten their steering wheel shaft?

That's an odd title that is ripe for jokes! Hi all, '85 EZ-GO Marathon electric new owner here. Has anyone shortened the shaft? It comes out pretty far on mine, impedes entrance, and kind of an awkward driving posture.

Honestly, I'm now just trying to get battery pack up and running well, but after that, and new seat covers, and maybe suspension, I'd like to move steering wheel a bit forward.

What's inside, and what is involved in doing this?

Here is a parts manual for it. Might be useful to see what is involved.

That is extremely helpful and before now, really hard to find. Thanks so much, JB!

I lengthened mine.... just cut the outside case (take your time) off about 6” down from the top (give or take) so it doesn’t interfere with the mount and not melt the bushing/seal off when you reweld it. Cut the inside shaft, shorted, weld, figure out the new outside case length and weld. Easy peasy.... it’s just a shaft in a tube.....
